Introducing Phygital Basketball.3on3 FreeStyle
Phygital Basketball.3on3 FreeStyle is an innovative sport that combines the excitement of digital gameplay with the intensity of real 2x2 basketball. Clubs compete across two connected stages – first in a video game and then on a physical court – creating a fast, dynamic format that blends the strategy of esports with the physical skill of basketball. This new discipline brings gamers and athletes together in a way that feels fresh, competitive, and accessible for all fans.
How It Works
Clubs
Each club has at least 2, and no more than 4, athletes. Players aged over 16, of all genders and backgrounds (whether amateur or professional) can take part in a club.
Competition Format
There are 16 clubs participating in the competition – divided into four groups of 4 clubs, playing in a GSL without a 5th match format. The groups are decided by a draw.
Each match is played in two parts with the scores from each stage weighted equally:
Digital Stage: In this stage, two players from each club compete in the basketball video game. Clubs select their characters one hour before the match. Matches have a duration of ten minutes or until one club reaches 19 (nineteen) points or more. As soon as a team reaches nineteen points, the Digital Stage ends immediately. If a team reaches twenty points, that score is also recorded, and the stage ends. The final score from the Digital Stage is then carried forward to the Physical Stage.
Physical Stage: Clubs of two athletes play on a standard 3x3 court, in a 2x2 format. The Physical Stage starts with the score carried over from the Digital Stage and continues until one club scores 39 points or after seven-minutes of “clean time”. The clock stops during dead balls and free throws. If no club has reached 39 points at the end of seven minutes of clean time, the club with the highest score at the end of the physical stage, wins the match.
If the combined score is tied after both stages, the match is decided by a series of free throws. Each club takes three alternating shots. If still tied, the clubs continue to take shots until one club scores more than the other with the same number of attempts. All eligible players must take a shot before any player can shoot again.
